Spinal therapy is another doctrine of acupuncture which focuses on the acu-points along the spinal cord. It is also called HuaTuoJiaJI points therapy in honor of Hua Tuo, the father of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The original HuaTuoJiaJI points, discovered by Hua Tuo, consists of 17 pairs of points (34 points total) located along both sides of the spinal cord from T1 through L5. Over the past 2,000 years, HuaTuoJiaJI points have been extended to cover the entire spine from the cervical spine to the sacrum. The pairs of HuaTuoJiaJI points at different levels of the vertebra have segmental relationship with our internal organs and limbs. Stimulation of these points at specific vertebral levels can regulate and harmonize the corresponding organs and limbs and promote healthy balance of our body. One of the common uses of spinal therapy is to select HuaTuoJiaJI points to treat acute or chronic pain and improving motor function.
